An oil massage being worked along the back.

What it does

You lie under a towel while the therapist works with warm oil in long, continuous strokes — down the back, along the legs, out through the shoulders. There is no stretching and no sharp pressure unless you ask for it.

It is the easier of the two classic treatments to receive, and the one most people find genuinely relaxing rather than merely effective. It also suits anyone whose muscles are sore rather than stiff.

You choose the oil: plain, aroma, coconut, or hot oil for a few baht more. Coconut is the local answer and the one we would pick.

Who it suits

  • Anyone who wants to relax rather than be worked on
  • Sore, tired muscles after walking, swimming or the gym
  • People who find Thai massage and its stretches too intense
  • Anyone who likes the idea of falling asleep halfway through

How the hour goes

  1. Choosing the oilPlain, aroma, coconut or hot. Tell us if you dislike strong scents — some of the aroma oils carry a long way.
  2. Back and shouldersWhere most of the hour goes. Long strokes first, then slower work into whatever is tight.
  3. Legs and feetDownward, then back up. Heavier on the calves, which take more of a beating on a scooter than anyone expects.
  4. Front, arms and headLighter, to finish. Say if you would rather stay face down for the whole hour — plenty of people do.

Tell us about any allergy to nuts or plant oils, and about any skin condition, cut or rash. Coconut oil on broken skin is a bad hour.

You will leave with oil on your skin. There is somewhere to rinse it off if you are going straight out, and it is worth doing before getting back on a bike.

Questions we get asked

What is the difference between oil massage and Thai massage?
Thai massage is worked through clothing with stretches and no oil. An oil massage is worked directly on the skin with long strokes and no stretching. Oil is the gentler of the two; Thai leaves you looser.
Which oil should I choose?
Coconut if you have no preference — it is local, light and barely scented. Hot oil if you are cold or stiff. Aroma if you like the scent to stay with you afterwards.
Do I keep my clothes on?
No, an oil massage is worked on bare skin, under a towel that stays on you throughout. You undress as far as you are comfortable, in private.
